APPRENTICESHIP/CREDENTIALING

NITAS is the U.S Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship program for IT apprenticeship in the following job-roles:

  • IT Generalist
  • Networking & Infrastructure
  • Database
  • Help Desk
  • Project Management
  • Information Assurance and Security
  • Application Development

Employers are able to utilize the system at no cost to provide a structured training program for their IT workers. Simply fill out a company profile on the NITAS system and agree to the U.S. Department of Labor standards and you can start today.

Your IT workers can then register under your company and assign themselves one or more of the seven tracks. Your self-assigned NITAS administrator will choose coaches (senior-level) IT workers and list any required classes or certifications. As your "apprentices" complete their required classes, demonstrate competencies to coaches and earn certifications, the coaches check-off these accomplishments in the system and when all of them have been completed, NITAS and the U.S. DoL issues them a Certificate of Completion in their chosen track.

HOW IT WORKS

EMPLOYERS
  • Employers register in the NITAS system to create a Sponsor Profile and company code.
  • One person from the Sponsor organization creates this Profile, becoming their NITAS Administrator. The NITAS Administrator creates a username, password and company code to access the system. For a company, an HR manager, or CIO would be a good candidate to act as the internal NITAS Administrator.
  • The NITAS Administrator selects and invites their current IT workers to register in the system and create Apprentice profiles.
  • These Apprentices create their profiles by entering contact/background info, creating their own usernames/passwords and associating themselves to the correct Sponsor by entering their company code. The apprentice also selects one or more of the seven NITAS tracks/job-roles.
  • The NITAS Administrator selects and invites their senior-level IT workers to act as Coaches in the system and assigns them to particular Apprentices.
  • These Coaches create their profiles by entering contact info, creating their own usernames/passwords and is assigned their roster of Apprentices.
  • The NITAS Administrator adds any classes or certifications that they would require from the apprentice before he/she completes the track.
  • Apprentices and Coaches meet on a regular basis, Apprentices demonstrate the competencies in their particular track and coaches go on on-line to validate the competencies and add coaching notes.
  • The NITAS Administrator and coaches are able to run reports to show which competencies have been achieved, how many more need to be achieved before completion, etc.
  • When all competencies have been validated by the Coach, any or all required classes have been completed and certifications earned, then the NITAS system issues a Certificate of Completion in that particular track that is endorsed by the United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship.
  • The Apprentice then has a virtual resume listing his accomplishments and can pursue the completion of another track.
TRAINING PROVIDERS
  • Training Providers (i.e. Community Colleges) register in the NITAS system to create a Sponsor Profile and company code.
  • One person from the Sponsor organization creates this Profile, becoming their NITAS administrator. The NITAS Administrator creates a username, password and company code to access the system. For a Community College, an IT instructor or Department head would be a good candidate to act as NITAS Administrator.
  • The NITAS Administrator works with their IT Department and invites their current IT students to register in the system and create Apprentice profiles.
  • These Apprentices create their profiles by entering contact/background info, creating their own usernames/passwords and associating themselves to the correct Sponsor by entering the correct company code. The apprentice also selects one or more of the seven NITAS tracks/job-roles.
  • The NITAS Administrator works with the IT Department and IT instructors to align and list their current IT classes with the appropriate NITAS tracks. The IT instructors are also invited to act as Coaches in the system and assigned to particular Apprentices.
  • These Coaches create their profiles by entering contact info, creating their own usernames/passwords and is assigned their roster of Apprentices.
  • Apprentices and Coaches meet on a regular basis, Apprentices demonstrate the competencies in their particular track and coaches go on on-line to validate the competencies and add coaching notes.
  • Apprentices who obtain internships in the local workforce are able to utilize the NITAS system to properly structure their internship around the competencies in their particular track. Utilizing the coaching method to learn, demonstrate and validate competencies on the job.
  • The NITAS Administrator and coaches are able to run reports to show which competencies have been achieved, how many more need to be achieved before completion, etc.
  • When all competencies have been validated by the Coach, either internally by the IT instructor or externally through an internship, any or all required classes have been completed and certifications earned, then the NITAS system issues a Certificate of Completion in that particular track that is endorsed by the United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship.
  • The Apprentice then has a virtual resume listing his accomplishments and can pursue the completion of another track.
