Concentrations

The competencies within all seven apprentice-able job roles have been developed by the industry, utilizing surveys, focus-groups, companies, associations, and educators nationwide. These competencies are further broken down in the system as a KNOW, DO and Exit Criteria in the system to provide a check-off system for the coach. The IT worker must show Knowledge of the competency either through past experience, taking a class or earning a certification that covers the particular competency. The IT worker must demonstrate the DO to his/her coach by completing the competency through their daily work. The Exit Criteria are notes for the coach that suggests what must be accomplished before the competency is validated by the coach.

Sample Competency with a DO/KNOW/Exit Criteria in the NITAS System
IT GENERALIST - NETWORKING AND INFRASTRUCTURE
KNOW Basic understanding of network cabling technologies such as copper and fiber optics.
DO Participate in the design and installation of cabling technologies including; calculating cable lengths accounting for bend and termination requirements, pulling cable through conduits, terminating cables, conducting continuity checks, applying final dressings and placing the cables into production. Successfully install, terminate and test copper and fiber optic cables
EXIT CRITERIA Successfully install, terminate and test copper and fiber optic cables.

In the system, traffic light icons are used to show whether a competency has been validated by a coach. When an apprentice demonstrates a particular KNOW or DO in the system, the apprentice turns the icon from red to yellow, an email is sent to the coach informing them to go into the system to validate the competency by turning the yellow to green or turning it back to red and adding a coaching note to inform the apprentice of what he/she needs additional work on. Coaches turn the Exit Criteria to green when they are satisfied the DO and KNOW have been achieved. When all competencies have been turned to green by a coach, a Certificate of Completion credential is mailed to the apprentice!
